Tuscan cuisine is known for its simple, rustic goodness. Some of the most traditional dishes are ribollita, crostini and bruschetta topped with all kinds of ingredients (from fresh tomatoes and basil to savory liver pate), panzanella bread salad, chestnut castagnaccio, and a wide range of homemade pastas. There is also a tradition of grilled meats. Here, we use everything from the best cut (Bistecca alla Fiorentina) to the “fifth quarter” (such as trippa, or tripe). All of them are excellent when paired with a good glass of our Chianti Classico Riserva DOCG or perhaps Greppicaia Bolgheri Superiore DOC.

Below, we’ve listed our top three favorite restaurants in Greve in Chianti where you can taste the best of authentic Tuscan cuisine. Come hungry and leave satisfied!

Our favorite restaurants in Greve in Chianti

Antica Macelleria Falorni

The website of the Falorni Macelleria (which means “butchery”) states, “We want to bring everyone the culture of good living and eating healthy, and share the pleasure of the table and the ancient traditions of Chianti.”

Antica Macelleria Falorni prides themselves on choosing only the best breeds of pig, boar, cow, and sheep, including the Cinta Senese boar, the Grigio pig (a cross between the Large White and the Cinta Senese), and wild boar, cinghiale, plus the Chianina, the huge white breed of Tuscan cow used in the famous Bistecca alla Fiorentina.

Falorni is more than a butchery: stop by the bistro to enjoy all their products. While they don’t have a kitchen, the menu offers a rich selection of traditional products, including a mixed tagliere, or platter of delicatessen with cheeses, soups, tartare, and typical Tuscan desserts to top it all off. It is all accompanied with a glass of wine using the enomatic system (also for take-away, they note): a non-conventional way to taste the traditions of Chianti.

Ristorante Il Portico

Il Portico has a classic trattoria vibe without looking touristy, and includes an outdoor veranda for the summertime and a well-stocked wine cellar. It has an intimate feeling, yet is large enough for groups and even ceremonies and banquets. They serve all the most traditional and soul-satisfying Tuscan dishes, from the classic bruschetta with fresh tomato and basil and mixed crostini, to homemade pasta for excellent primi piatti and a range of grilled specialties for the secondo. This includes, of course, the Bistecca alla Fiorentina and beef filet with black truffles and veal patè, plus a tasty selection of sides. Finish off with desserts made in-house.

Their popularity and success, they say, is simply using “the freshest raw ingredients of exceptional quality and mastery in cooking them.” And that’s what we’re all looking for when we sit down for a good meal, isn’t it?

Enoteca Ristorante Gallo Nero

Gallo nero means “black rooster,” which is both the symbol of their restaurant and, more famously, that of Chianti Classico. Run by a Tuscan family since 1984, the Gallo Nero is located in the same premises that were once the stables used for the postal services of the Grand Duke of Florence. They began as a simple trattoria that served a good glass of wine alongside the traditional ribollita soup, and grew as tourism came to the area in the late 1980s. But, they have always stuck to their simple, genuine, and good quality ingredients for rustic Tuscan cuisine.

Today, the locale is warm and welcoming, both comfortable and elegant. Taste some of the best wines of the zone here alongside homemade pasta made fresh every day by nonna Duilia: 78 years old and full of energy with a lifetime of experience behind her and the entire staff at her command! Don’t forget to try all the Tuscan and Italian cheeses and great sides, too. But their specialty is alle brace, or on the grill: choose from a wide range of grilled meats like salsiccia and Bistecca alla Fiorentina, which are excellent when drizzled with Chianti DOP extra virgin olive oil.
